Leo Santamarina, MD joined Bucks-Mont Eye in the summer of 2017. Specializing in diseases of the vitreous and retina, he has since broadened the scope of our practice to include retina care and treatment. This includes, but is not limited to, the diagnosis and management of macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.

Dr. Santamarina has been married for over 25 years to his wife, Pam, and has 3 adult children. He is an experienced canoeist and outdoorsman. He plays several musical instruments and is able to converse with our patients in Spanish.

Additional Information

Leo Santamarina, M.D. is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist and fellowship trained vitreo-retinal physician and surgeon. Prior to joining Bucks-Mont Eye Associates, he was in private practice in Philadelphia and Delaware. He has previously held an academic appointment as Director of Vitreoretinal Services at Drexel University College of Medicine, and Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia and has taught retinal medical and surgical techniques to many residents.

Dr. Santamarina graduated from Brown University Magna Cum Laude with Honors in Neuroscience. At the time, Brown University was one of the only Universities to offer an undergraduate degree in Neuroscience. He completed his Medical School training at UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he received Honors in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Ophthalmology Research. After a Residency in Internal Medicine at Bryn Mawr Hospital, where he was Chief Resident during his last year, Dr. Santamarina went on to complete his Residency in Ophthalmology at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn, and a Fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery at the Tulane University of Louisiana.

In addition to his teaching activities, Dr. Santamarina is a former scientific reviewer for the peer review journal, Ophthalmology. He has participated in clinical studies as both an Investigator and a Sub-Investigator. He has coauthored scientific articles published in medical journals. Dr. Santamarina is the Retina Section editor for the book, Ophthalmic Clinical Advisor. He provides the most recent advances in care for patients with Diabetic Retinopathy, Macular Degeneration, Retinal Vein Occlusions, Uveitis, Retinal Tears and various other Retinal diseases at Bucks-Mont-Eye Associates.
